If you paint over popcorn ceiling, will it get rid of some of that texture? And if so, what is the best paint

Yes, we have painted over popcorn ceilings and it does get rid of some of the texture. The little tips seem to fall off when you roll on the paint. You got a lot of information with all the other answers, but here is my experience: Roll over the ceiling with a good name brand paint like Benjamin Moore ceiling paint. Ceiling paint is always flat. Don't try to soak the ceiling with paint and don't go back over the same area again and again. That is where you run into trouble and some of the popcorn ceiling can come off in strips and looks awful. If one coat does not cover then make sure the ceiling is very dry before you put on a second coat. If you don't try to put the paint on too heavy you will get good result. We painted our ceilings twice over the years with good results. Good LuckIf you paint over popcorn ceiling, will it get rid of some of that texture? And if so, what is the best paint
No it will not, however some of the popcorn will fall off...if you just want to paint over it use a semi-gloss paint and be sure to cover the furniture and the floor as some of it will come off, but you will still have the texture, the paint will seal it so it don't fall off so easily, however if you want to remove the texture it isn't hard but it is messy....cover EVERYTHING with plastic, use one of the garden sprayers that you pump up and spray small sections of the ceiling at a time and just scrape off with a dry wall mud applicator as they have a wide blade and will cover a larger area than a putty knife. If you paint over popcorn ceiling, will it get rid of some of that texture? NO! Don't try it! It is a disaster! The only way to get rid of popcorn ceilings is by sanding it down...and boy what a mess! But it is a nice result when done, just wear a mask! If you don't want to remove the popcorn, paint over it with a flat paint in a sprayer, it doesn't quit work with a roller (duh!) :) Good luck!
If popcorn gets wet, it falls off if it is touched. You can spray paint popcorn (a very messy undertaking) but you can't use a roller to paint it.

To remove popcorn (be sure it's not so old it contains asbestos) use water in a spray bottle, then scrape. Messy but well worth it.
hmmm we always use a deep nap roller when painting over a pop ceiling....does well with flat paint......it will hide about 25 % of the popcorn look....remove it by wetting it with a sprayer and use a pole scraper after water has sat on ceiling about 10 mins....
