Can I use joint compound to make the wall smooth for texture and then put a prime and then the final paint ?

I have the texture of that bumpy-ness and wavyness, i don't like that texture, i want my walls to be smooth, is it safe or okay to apply joint compound to make it smooth? i've heard you can and then you can't, i've heard it cracks and falls, but then i hear to not leave joint compound as your last coat, which of course i'm not going to do, i need to do the whole inside of the house and if i can apply it and make the texture smooth, then a prime, then a final coat which will then be the color? First time doing this but i've been doing research before i do this, sorry if i sound like i'm repeating myself lol i just want to make sure i'm getting everything in there! Can I use joint compound to make the wall smooth for texture and then put a prime and then the final paint ?
It sounds as though you have artexed walls, in which case the best remedy is to have them re plastered. This is a skilled job and very difficult to do well if you haven't done it before. Ask a plasterer for a quote. Can I use joint compound to make the wall smooth for texture and then put a prime and then the final paint ?
Clean the walls with TSP. Do one coat scraping the excess joint compound off the surface. Let dry at least 8 hours. Keep applying coats and letting it dry. Once you have it smooth(which you can do by sanding or damp sponge which I prefer since there is less dust) you can prime the walls....let dry and paint.
What thickness will be needed to fill the voids? If their is cracking in the textured walls you will need to control them, ';joint tape';.

Make sure walls are not waxy or even slightly greasy. If possible, sand extremely high spots down a little. Coat walls with a primer.

If most of wall area will take 1/8 inch application for fully filling, you should be OK. Maybe a deeper spot here and there. If thicker application is required, you should look into other wall covering products.

Prep is important to success. Better safe than sorry. You heard that one before.
If the the wall surface is flat and clean you can begin right away to apply a coating. If it is stained with nicotine it should be cleaned with TSP first or primed before mudding with a stain hiding primer so the stain does not leach through.

Rather than use wall compound for the project you would acheive a stronger result using Thin Set.

Also, Thin Set does not shrink like wall compound does so you can be done with one application and one surface smoothing. Thin Set is a powder that needs to be mixed so a strong drill is needed and a mixing rod. Thin Set comes in various drying time ranges i.e. 30 minute, 45 minute, 90 minute and such. Pick a longer drying time so you can do one wall before your abutting edges start to dry. Use good stainless steel trowels and blades for application and of different widths.

Make up only as much as you can use before it dries and keep covered with a wetted towel or paper towel or such and use a tray to hold the batch you using at the moment. Have a wet cloth handy for wiping off your tools as needed.

Do not apply big globs of material; you are only applying a skim coat to level.

Imperfections can be smoothed with a wet sponge. To sand the entire wall surface get a swiveling sanding plate to hold the sandpaper or for less dust that open checkered sheet for smoothing compounds. This is screwed onto a stick for long reach and ease.

After the Thin Set or compound has cured (let it rest for a day if you have the time) it willhave to be primed with a good quality primer B-I-N is a good fast drying shellac primer that will seal, prime and be ready to paint almost immediately but your paint dealer can recommend many others adn BIN as a strong odor , if that matters. A thicker primer will add to a smooth surface.

The primer coat should be uniform in appearance before top coating. Most primers can be tinted to create a base closer to the color you will be painting the walls.

You should be satisfied with each step of the process before going to the next. Do not rely on step 4 to fix step 2 and such. Have good strong, plastic drop clothes secured well and a moving work mat for under your mud bucket , paints and such. It makes for a neater job and you feet won't be walking on spilled stuff. The 3 foot wide rolls of plastic work well. Any mud that gets onto trim or places you don't want it clean it immediately, it is much easier than doing it later.

The advantage of premixed compound is that it is already mixed. It is more convenient but Thin Set is better. The second advantage of premixed is it can be time saving unless it shrinks too much and you have to reapply. Doing the whole house, have good strong tools to help you. A job like this is also really good to do if you are a dancer and a the right tempo of music can make it go better. After all this work, use a high quality paint; it doesn't have to be expensive but don't go too cheap.

I want to paint stripes on one side of my room, but the walls are textured..?

what can i do to make it so the paint wont seep under the tape? is there a spray or something?I want to paint stripes on one side of my room, but the walls are textured..?
Make sure to use painter's tape...you can stick it really firmly to the walls without as much chance at pulling up the texture. I don't know of a better method than taping; just make sure to run your fingernail along the edge of the tape to press it down firmly.

I've also heard of that you can use an acrylic matt medium found at craft stores. You paint it on next to the tape and then paint your wall color--it should help give a crisp line with no bleed through.

I was browsing through wallpapers to cover 2 walls in my room, which would need about 4 rolls. The rolls I liked were all over £20 ($35ish) so I couldn't afford to get everything I needed.

Don't texture your walls. In a year's time you may be fed up with it and it cannot be undone. You are stuck with it. If you want something different, buy a 2.5L tin of suede effect paint. Put it on with a brush and see if you like it. If you do, then do the rest of the room either in a similar sued effect paint or a more traditional paint and keep the suede look for a feature wall. But honestly, I would keep away from the texture stuff.

Good luck.
maybe a faux linen technique where you strie a glaze down horizontally, then let it dry, then strie a second time, but vertically. it truly looks remarkably like linen when done properly

to make a simple glaze, mix paint and glaze with a very small amount of white

practice on white boards first (but it's easy, don't be scared) (but honestly, the savings of doing a linen strie (sometimes called a cross hatch strie) won't be worth the time and effort. my suggestion is to buy the wallpaper for convenience)
First just so you know this isn't easily reversible. Once you texture walls they stay textured. Buy a bucked ot fast drying drywall mud. This is applied like paint with a scrub brush. Brush it on and dab or swirl it until you get what you want. Once it's dry pait it like you would any other wall. Practice on an old piece of wood first.
Paint the wall the color you like in a lighter shade of it. When that is dry either use a sea sponge or rag rolling technique in the darker shade of paint.

http://www.how-to-faux-finish.com/
method one ...cheap ...buy a roller with built-in pattern maker ...Various types ...method two ..cheapest ...put elastic bands over your existing roller ..more the merrier
Like some other people said, i would use a sponge after the paint is almost dry and maybe do a pattern.

Texture in watercolour painting. Any hints & tips?

I need any ideas on how to make textures in watercolour paintings. you can use pastels over the top

start with a wash and then increase thickens lay by layer

let the paint run down

sprinkle rices is another one I heard of.

Flick water colour over it

blot dry with serviette

or lay a text matarial over the top

just experiment and piddle around-isn't that what you do with your other mediums? it is harder to get the textures you want with watercolors-im not gonna lie, i do know more about acrylics- but sand, foil, sponges and oil works well-it also depends if your water is hard or soft. sometimes if you just experiment with something you get a really good result, now turn that into something, paint around it, you know? you could also make a comb out of cardboard or just use a normal one and play around with that. you get a marble effect using a granulated wash, that could be used as sky or landscape. In watercolor the texture ends up being more ';tromp l'oiel'; (sp) then actually being raised off the paper like with acrylics. the key here is layering.hope this helps!

  • Can i spray texture over a already painted wall?

any other prep besides priming? Can i spray texture over a already painted wall?
I've been doing it for years.

Never had a problem. Can i spray texture over a already painted wall?
I think you can, but why don't you try a test patch? I like to apply texture to small jobs using a plastic wisk broom, that I dip into the selected texture mix, pull the bristles back, and let fly towards the wall. Try a little test area, and then you'll know. If you don't like how it's looking, wipe it off with wet rags, and try again. If you do small scale tests like that, you'll know when you get ready to spray the whole wall. If it's a small area, you might find you like this method of application. :)

Texture in painting? what can i use with acrylics?

i love texture and want some ideas on what i could use for texture. added material or anything.

i heard tile glue is good? is that true?

Texture in painting? what can i use with acrylics?
Yeah, sure, tile glue is good. You could also try spreading pollyfilla and painting over that, you could uses a very thick paint called gauche, You could add sawdust to the acrylic paint and paint with that, you can paint over sand paper, lay down some denim and paint over that as well or carpet, wood, plastic, stones ect.

Basically, you could paint over anything and it would have a texture.

    Have fun!

I am trying to figure out what to do! I don't want to sand my texture off. That will leave a new stripe mark! Does anyone know if I should just keep painting layers on or any other solution?I have sand textured walls. I am trying to paint over stripes the last person painted on. They still show!?
You don't need to prime over existing paint. Painting two coats of a good paint (not the cheap stuff) should get rid of the strips. If still a touch visible you may need a third.

If you buy the cheap paint it will probably take 4-6 coats. There is more hiding ability in the good paint.

    No sanding will be required.

Save the image that you want to use as a texture in .bmp format in either C:\Program Files\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 9\Textures\ or in My Documents\My PSP Files\Textures.

You might have to convert the image to greyscale before you save it (I've only worked with greyscale textures). This can be done by selecting the Greyscale item from the Image menu _before_ saving to one of the texture folders.

How can you bring about changes in texture while using acrylic paints?

i always end up with a uniform texture with only variations in the shade of color...How can you bring about changes in texture while using acrylic paints?
There are special mediums you can use to thicken the paint. Go to www.cheapoes.com or www.dickblick.com to get info on these. Modeling paste, heavy gel mediums, Fiber Paste, Coarse Crackle Paste, Coarse Pumice Paste, Clear Granular Gel,Coarse Garnet Gel. Some artists put a bit of sand in the paint. You can even press a screen into the paint or bubble wrap to create texture. How can you bring about changes in texture while using acrylic paints?
The easiest choice is to apply the paint in non-uniform thicknesses. Apply the paint thickly.

You can also do an underpainting with another media, such as modeling paste. You could even create a collage of different media (paper, found objects, etc.) for your underpainting.
Hi Gabbybab,..Try using ';different'; tools, to apply the paint, such as a pallet knife, or brushes with very stiff brisles,..Also try putting the paint on thick, %26amp; keep on working it with your brush,..WHILE it is drying,..

  • What can I add to PVA glue to make it thicker and use it as paste for textured painting?

You can mix it with cheap toilet paper. Just mix about 1 part water to 3 parts glue. Then soak the thin public bathroom style toilet paper in it. Then use your hands to mush up the mix. It forms a sticky paste that you can use to create texture or hold things onto the canvas. I know an artist who uses this in all of her paintings. What can I add to PVA glue to make it thicker and use it as paste for textured painting?
I don't think you can thicken it by adding anything. Short of going out and buying sculpting gel I would try some experiments on paper. Brush on, give it a few minutes to set up and then try scumbling into the surface with a clean dry bristle brush to see if you can lift up some texture. I think you could repeat this process a couple times. You could also try applying with a thick soft paint roller like for wall paint. Be sure to rinse out really well or it will wreck the roller.

Good Luck. What can I add to PVA glue to make it thicker and use it as paste for textured painting?
    add texture white
cornflour i think you have to cook it with the paste well thats wat you do when you make your own glue.

Ive heard about it as a size, but not to thicken things up. It would help if you clarified what paint you are using, oils, acrylic ect.

Can you paint over a textured wall?

There is this awesome house we want to buy. all the walls are textured... i'm not sure what its called, but its like little bumps. popcorn maybe? anyway, its like this peachy/pink color and i would def want to paint it a different color. how would i do this? can i just paint over it?Can you paint over a textured wall?
For textured walls yes. There are rollers made just for textured walls that work really well. You have to first paint in different directions to get all the cracks and then paint in the same direction so it looks nice. However if it's popcorn ceilings we are talking about, painting those doesn't work. Good luck with your new house! Can you paint over a textured wall?
If it is a sprayed on texture you can probably remove it with water and a scraper. But it will be a big mess. And you may need to make repairs to the walls underneath.

If it is a plaster texture then you just need to paint with a roller.

But if you are serious about the house, take the time to go back and make sure you want to tackle the job. Asked the sellers how they last painted those walls.
Hey Baby Colton!!! Born on my birthday!! Sounds like the orange peel finish they put on walls. Just get a thicker nap for the roller. Someone at a home improvement store should be able to help you get what you need. Roxanne
it doesnt matter what the texture is .yes, just paint the walls what ever color you want.

    Paint textures?

I want to paint an accent wall in my living room its about 16'', i really like metallic paint but im finding it hard to find the colour i want, Homebase is very limited and B%26amp;Q doesnt have the green i want. Im looking for a sort of sage or gold/green Any ideas? The other option im looking at is suede effect paint, it looks difficult to get right but has a much wider range of colours. What do you think?Paint textures?
I like metallic paint too and tried it a few years ago. It consisted of two pots that were applied in different ways and even though it was undertaken by a professional, it looked simply dreadful - cheap and patchy! We ended up repainting it virtually straight away. If you favour the metallic look, why not try wallpaper - there are lots of patterns around at the moment that have large, metallic accents within them which look very classy and expensive.Paint textures?
Paint your wall in sage green and allow to dry. Then mix 'clear base' or 'scumble' with some gold emulsion [ make enough for the wall so you don't run out] and apply over the sage painted wall with a roller. This will give a transculent effect.so you will see the green with a gold shimmer over the top. Try on some plywood first to see if you like the effect

How do you add texture to wallboard before painting?

add a little bit of white sand to the paint and mix really, really well......you'll get great texture with just a little effort.

  • I want to paint the lower half of my walls a textured blue ontop of a white base, how do you transition?

Where the blue would meet the white halfway up the wall how do you transistion? any ideas would be great I cant seem to find any pictures or articals about this style of painting, maybe its called something I dont know? any help would be awsome!

ThanksI want to paint the lower half of my walls a textured blue ontop of a white base, how do you transition?
A couple of things that you can do...

    1) Paint your walls entirely white. Then to put on a crisp band of color without any bleed, first place a line of blue painter's tape where you want the color separation to be, then run a small bead of latex caulk over the edge where the two colors will meet. Wipe down the caulk until you have a very thin layer on the wall, then peel off the tape, and paint up to the line of caulk. The thin bead will seal off the dry surface better than any tape. A few hours later, peel off the caulk.

    2) do as I stated above, but you could also add a wallpaper border or a chair rail molding to enhance the separation.

Is wallpaper a better option or Textured paint?

texture paint when applied by an amateur ALWAYS looks like such a mess. Wallcoverings applied properly is a much better choice. Is wallpaper a better option or Textured paint?
It depends on how long you intend to keep the wallpaper. I prefer textured paint since you can change the colors of the wall much easier than stripping off wallpaper.

If you choose to apply wallpaper make sure the wall has been primed with water-based kilz-it. After that is dry roll on a couple coats of wallpaper sizing to form a barrier between the wall and the wallpaper. It is a starch like substance mixed with water. I find it easier to apply using a small sponge roller.

How do you keep paint from migrating past the border tape in textured interior walls?

You need to ';feather'; the paint on under the tape... lightly load the brush, and then lightly (think of this-- youre using a feather to paint, do it gently!_ stroke the paint from MID TAPE DOWN. If you do this patiently, it will sort of seal off the bottom of the tape with a layer of paint, and then you will be able to paint the next coat normally. You will need to be really careful when you take the tape off that it doesnt peel any of the paint off, but once you take your time with that, it should all be nice looking and crisp. How do you keep paint from migrating past the border tape in textured interior walls?
Make sure your tape is down really tight to the wall (I use blue 3M painters tape), use a brush rather than a roller to cut in along the tape, don't load a lot of paint on the brush, paint strokes away from the tape. Should help unless you have one heck of a texture. How do you keep paint from migrating past the border tape in textured interior walls?
I painted my bedroom today and had the same problem...it's hard to press the tape deep enough into the texture in order to prevent leakage. I think I'm just going to go back over it with a small paintbrush (like one i'd use for art) and try to make thin lines to define the edges and cover up the spots that seeped under the tape. The paint was fine in most spots, but it looks pretty bad in the bumpier places. I found an old can of ceiling paint in my garage to touch up with, but I've got 3 more rooms to paint so I'm curious as to what you find out. I'll be watching this question...good luck!

Can I paint over textured walls?

Can you paint over textured walls? This house has all types of texture: skip trowel, small stucco-like areas, popcorn ceilings. How do you paint over these types of walls when they need to be repainted? Can I paint over textured walls?
Use a long haired roller, alternatively you can now buy a textured wall cover which smooths out the surface like a plaster. Can I paint over textured walls?
Hi--we just bought an old '60's ranch with the same stucco/popcorn stuff going on here. You CAN just paint on over it, but if the stucco and popcorn really isn't your thing ( and you or someone you know is handy) nailing 1/4'; or 3/8'; sheetrock over it will give you a smooth surface to start all over with again before you paint or wallpaper or whatever you really want to do with the room.

In our area, prepping an 11x 14 room is about a hundred bucks if you're doing the labor yourself ( which the hubby and I are). Trying to scrape the stucco off can be a nightmare--you either paint over it and live with it or throw that layer over it.

    Hope this helps?
Popcorn ceiling should be sprayed . They are hard to paint with a roller even one's designed for that. But if you paint the ceiling use an eggshell or semi-gloss so the ceiling is sealed and it will make painting it again alot easier.

The other can be painted with a foam roller. I actually use the small roller to paint my walls. I think it takes less pressure and I have painted rooms using the small sponge rollers. If I need a second coat I just put the roller in a plastic bag in the fridge until I'm ready for a second coat.
Just use a roller....thick nap will paint over all this stuff...the ceiling will eat up the paint, but big deal....certainly cheaper than having the texture removed (asbestos !) Nothing you state is out of the ordinary. Good luck and have a fun time! While painting a popcorn cieling, expect small lumps to come off if it has never been painted....no big deal...you will not miss them. Goldwing
you can't paint over the popcorn ceiling. but you can definitely paint the textured wall.
Yah dude, chillax, I have popcorn celings and the walls with the skip trowel, nothing happens when u paint over them, just paint it.
Yes, you can paint over texture. I would use a spray gun for the popcorn ceiling.
Yes you can. They have a special roller that has a thicker nap at the hardware store.
Hell yeah! Just use a roller, dude. A paint brush will do for around your trim. With the popcorn ceiling, a spray gun is best.

Can you use chalkboard paint on textured walls?

like ,can you erase chalk on it easly ?Can you use chalkboard paint on textured walls?
As a professional Drywaller, I wouldn't recommend it. You might consider a patch/area you want skimmed smooth and paint afterwardCan you use chalkboard paint on textured walls?
Would not advise it because if your going to write on it your chalk will probably break the paint and it would turn into a mess. Now if its because its the area you like then smooth it out scrap it down sand then paint it and frame it up. Sooner or later a bump will break.
That would depend on what the texture of the walls is... if we're talking stuff like popcorn ceilings, no. If we're talking textured mdf, perhaps.

  • Impasto gel, texture paste, modelling paste + oil paint?

I'm a beginner and would like to paint a texturized, rough surface, rich colour painting. I was given Impasto Gel Gloss, Texture Paste (both from Daler - Browney) and Modelling Paste (Amsterdam brand?). My question is, can I use these with oil paint or do I have to use acrylic? I have zero experience using acrylic, so far only oil and only on canvas. Can anybody give me advises on these question and some basic technique or maybe a good website to look? Thank's a lot.Impasto gel, texture paste, modelling paste + oil paint?
A quick look through Daler-Rowney's catalogue shows they do not make an impasto or texture gel for oils - their gels are for acrylics. Also, Royal Talens who make Amsterdam Oils do not make a modeling paste for oils. Please check the labels on the products you have - if it says anywhere on the label ';Acrylic Polymer'; then you must not use it with oils.

Grumbacher makes a product called ';Zec'; which is a fast-drying impasto gel for mixing with oils (sorry can't find a link). Winsor %26amp; Newton also makes two fast-drying gels called ';Liquin Impasto'; and ';Liquin Oleopasto';. http://www.winsornewton.com/products.asp鈥?/a>

I believe you can mix any amount of paint to gel ratio - more gel = more transparent, more paint = more opaque. Mixing with a palette knife first, instead of a brush, gives you the best blending capabilities. Apply with stiff (hog bristle) brush or painting knife. Do a search for impasto or knife painting and you should be able to find some great techniques.

Have fun!Impasto gel, texture paste, modelling paste + oil paint?
the gel mediums are usually for acrylic paints. you can definitely not mix a gel medium for acrylic with oil paints. they just wont mix properly and it will lead to problems once you start painting. oil paint doesnt really require the mediums because it is so thick. you can just use that thick body of oil paint to create all sorts of texture. you can also mix things in your oil paint like sand or crushed material to give it an interesting texture.
products that are designed for use with acrylics rarely mix with oils because they are water based.

to add texture you can use pencil shavings, shredded paper, sand... just about anything. mix it directly into your paint. you don't need to spend a fortune. just make sure it's dry.
For a texturized painting, especially for a beginner, I recommend you use acrylics. I know, you only know oil, but cheer up!

Oil painting is not nearly as easy as acrylic painting when it comes to clean up, drying time, etc. Also, you have much less problems deciding whether to use various types of additives to achieve certain effects, AND it is less expensive.

Acrylics work the same as oils when actually painting, in that you mix the same colors to get the same effects. The paint itself can be made thin or thick just as in oils, but with much less fuss. You can simply add water to thin it out, or gel medium to thin out the color without thinning out the texture.

If you want your acrylic paints to dry more slowly, just add something called ';Retardant.'; The more you add, the more slowly your paint will dry.

And best of all, acrylics clean up easily with soap and water!

When I allow my students to begin doing pictures in color, I always suggest that if they choose to use paint, they use acrylics as they are the easiest and cheapest. I have them buy one or two smallish canvas boards (around the 9';X12'; size) and practice on those. When your board is used up, you can always paint it white and start again in a few minutes. This way you save time and money practicing your skills.

You may use the brushes you already have for oils, but you can also buy a few more for fine details or large effects. And best of all, every brush I've seen, whether it says so or not, works with acrylics.

And two more things: instead of buying and cleaning palettes, I use a regular dinner plate that I've covered with aluminum foil. It makes a great palette and when you're done you can throw the foil away and your plate is clean.

I also use an ice cube tray to mix up colors I want to save and use another day. When I'm finished for the day I just put a few drops of water on top of each compartment that has paint in it, stick the tray in a zip lock bag and put it somewhere that the dog can't reach.

Offhand, I cannot recommend a particular instructional website, but I'm sure that if you do a web search, you will come up with many links.

However, since you already know a bit about painting, and since I've told you most of what you need to know about what to mix to thin acrylics out or make them dry more slowly, you are actually ready to start. Just do those practice boards first to make yourself feel more confident and you'll do fine.

Since you can achieve any effect with acrylics that you can with oils, plus you actually have a wider and brighter color range, and since they are easier and cheaper to work with, I'll bet that once you try acrylics you'll stick with them.

Which is better for painting garage with textured 1-11 siding, paint or solid stain?

my opinion is paint, because t-111 siding is basically plywood so the face of it usually has some defects and with stain you still have to seal it...Which is better for painting garage with textured 1-11 siding, paint or solid stain?
My husband and I are currently siding our garage, and they don't make the accent color that we wanted, so we painted it. Bright blue - tough color to work with because it is dark, but what we used (and it is absolutely gorgeous ) is Oil Based Industrial Outdoor Paint. Hope that helps.

I don't think that it would take stain, and I'm pretty sure that if it did, it would not be a consistent color.Which is better for painting garage with textured 1-11 siding, paint or solid stain?
We have T1-11 on a shed in our yard and we painted a sagey green color. It still looks good; hasn't peeled and it sits in full sun (it's been 7-8 years now).
Solid stain is actually better for t1-11. Paint will peel eventually and look like crap on t1-11 but stain will just fade a bit every few years and subsequent coats go on easier and still look good. Scraping paint off of t1-11 is a chore.

Is there some sort of treatment you can put over paint to tone down the color, without a textured look?

It's a bright yellow wall that I would like to look more like a butter cream but I do not want a faux textured finish. Is there some sort of treatment you can put over paint to tone down the color, without a textured look?
    Antiquing gel or glaze.

But if it were me I'd just repaint. Save yourself a lot of time and money. Instead of spending the next week buying things to tone down the color and end up still not liking it.Is there some sort of treatment you can put over paint to tone down the color, without a textured look?
Just find a paint a color you like and paint away.

Behr latex at Home Depot has almost no odor.
It seems that whatever you do, it will be work. why not just repaint in the color you want?
Repainting may be the easier solution, but if i were you, I would paint a chocolate brown glaze. It would not only tone down your yellow but give a beautiful finish

Textured paint from lowes on ceiling?

removed popcorn, drywall in place on ceiling in bathroom.Have sanded.Would like some texture.Any suggestions that is not real complicatedTextured paint from lowes on ceiling?
Mine has no texture-just painted with the wall color(because after a shower you can see the walls, windows and (you know the ceiling) is full of moisture. It is easier to wipe down the walls and clean them up in the bathroom but in many cases with a popcorn ceiling it is hell. as that stuff starts flaking off(or stains). The bathroom is such a small room that most people do not make it their center piece in the house(just do their business and then get out of that stinky hole).

Texture is used to ';hide'; badly drywalled ceilings.. Now a days they are going with a white painted look(before the invention of texture) Semigloss or eggshell.(oil based paint)Textured paint from lowes on ceiling?
Most hardware stores have ';TEXTURE IN A CAN'; that can be sprayed on and is very easy to use. (ITS VERY MESSY)

The professional technique is to use a hopper and air compressor with texture that is mixed to a heavy soup and sprayed on the walls and ceilings.

Another method is to mix drywall mud with a little extra water and dab it on the ceiling with a short string mop and then knock it down with drywall knife.

My bathroom walls are textured but the landlord patch a few spots I want to paint the room?

How do i bring the texture back to the wall. Its that plaster material that gives it the splattered look....almost like those cellings you see sometimes. My bathroom walls are textured but the landlord patch a few spots I want to paint the room?
texture is applied in several different ways. you have to figure out what method was used, and if possible, use the same one.My bathroom walls are textured but the landlord patch a few spots I want to paint the room?
get yurself down to b%26amp;q they'll have what you're looking for.
get drywall topping compound, very important that it is ';Topping Compound'; apply to the areas and then use your fingers or the bottom of the trowl and touch the compound then pull up and it should give u texture
you can buy little amounts of that texture in aerosol cans, about the size of spray paint. It is pretty easy, just make sure it is dry before you start to paint....and that you get the right kind of texture

I want to mix ceiling mud and latex paint to textured ceiling, how much paint to 5 gal of mud?

I have a textured roller to roll out the ceiling, but need to know how much paint to use in a 5 gal bucket of mud.I want to mix ceiling mud and latex paint to textured ceiling, how much paint to 5 gal of mud?
    First of all,,,';DON';T';!!!

The two substances aren't meant to be mixed. The MUD is designed,,,as is,,, to dry as rapidly as is possible, and at a consistency to keep it in place as it dries. Adding Latex paint will only thin it, and by the time you were able to mix it all well enough, you have ';soup'

The texturing should be professionally done, and never anything other than a ';knock Down'; effect. Then paint over, after.

Smooth is truly the best way to go however.

Rev. StevenI want to mix ceiling mud and latex paint to textured ceiling, how much paint to 5 gal of mud?
You can add Drywall mud Powder to the paint, and make it thick for Texture- you can also use Drywall Primer, it is thick already- before it drys, use a Stomp Brush or Crows foot brush. My 2000 sf home is done exactly like that.

I strongly advise you not to do it. Textured ceilings are hard to keep clean, and hard to repaint without damaging them. They also reduce the resale value of your home. Ask any realtor.

  • After spraying texture on a wall, how long will it take to dry? When can it be painted?

Had some guys texture my garage today. I want to paint it asap but need to make sure this stuff is cured first...is 24hours sufficient or does it need to be longer? After spraying texture on a wall, how long will it take to dry? When can it be painted?
24 hrs is suficient as a rule of thumb, however opening doors and windows in the garage will speed up the drying unless it is high humidity or raining at your place then more time is needed to cure,After spraying texture on a wall, how long will it take to dry? When can it be painted?
as long as it is white and doesn't have any gray in the texture color its dry,if it is greyish it will be damp and not dry
24 hours should do it. One way to help is have a small fan or heater in the room to aid evaporation.

How do remove textured wallpaper that has been applied directly to the sheetrock? I want to paint now.?

Score the wallpaper using a paper tiger tool. Then, saturate newspaper with warm water and apply it to the wall at a seam. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, then gently work a scraper under the edge and lift. This should remove the paper with minimal damage to the sheetrock. You also should only apply it to an area that can be removed in less than half an hour so you don't end up saturating the paper on the sheetrock. How do remove textured wallpaper that has been applied directly to the sheetrock? In any paint department they have a small tool that pokes holes in it. Once that it done don`t get any of the chemicals they sale to remove it. wast of money. Get a spray bottle and put hot water and soap. Drench it and Waite a 30 min. Drench it again and Waite. Soon you will be able to take of.

employeeHow do remove textured wallpaper that has been applied directly to the sheetrock? I want to paint now.?
By your question I am assuming you DID NOT prime the sheetrock prior to hanging the paper. If this is true, no matter what you do or how careful you are there is going to be some damage to the sheetrock. I like hot water and vinegar, being careful not to over saturate the unprimed sheetrock.

Can i use plaster to get texture in painting?

yes,it mixs and makes a good color for a room in your house or something like that or where ever you put your paint. Can i use plaster to get texture in painting?

What can I use to change the texture on drywall with an existing painted rough finish?

You can replaster. Applying a thin coat of plaster over over you rough walls will smooth it out. What can I use to change the texture on drywall with an existing painted rough finish?
that depends on how much effort you wish to put in to the project. you could sand, prime and paint; apply a skim coat, prime and paint; apply a different texture, prime and paint; etc. check out sites like diynet for ideas and find something that suits your taste, time, and budget. hope it all turns out for you. What can I use to change the texture on drywall with an existing painted rough finish?
As an artist, I would say a paint roller - heavy sponge type also with textures and Use with a generous supply of paint. It will fill in the rough drywall painted texture.

    That should definitely Cover it.

Is painting using the ';sand'; texture fairly easy?

I want to paint my bathroom and want to try a ';texture'; but don't want to mess with ragging, rolling, or sponging. (been there, done that!) Any advice? Is painting using the ';sand'; texture fairly easy?
I have tried the sand texture and although it was easy and worked, I was not happy with the result. If I had it to do over again I would get a hopper and spray new texture on the walls then repaint. Is painting using the ';sand'; texture fairly easy?
It can be easy to use the sand texture but you might want to rethink that choice. If you brush against the rough sand-textured wall in the bathroom, you could get a nasty abrasion from it. Bathroom paint is always semi-gloss, too. That can look pretty funky with the sand added to it.

Anyway, the key to a successful application of sand texture is to keep stirring the paint vigorously from the bottom of the can because the sand will want to settle there and not stay evenly suspended in the paint.

btw, they make paint rollers that simulate ragging and rolling, etc. With a little practice, the paint job looks super!! ; )
dont go there lisa ..it dont look good ..its rough on the skin if you brush by ..and it collects the dirt like a magnet ..think again !
Sand absorbs moisture and your wall will grow. Use latex semi-gloss and prime first with ';KILLS'; primer.

  • Can I spray acoustic (popcorn) ceiling texture directly on to a painted plaster ceiling?

I just want to know if the texture will adhere to the paint or do I need to apply a prime coat over the paint before I spray the texture.ThanksCan I spray acoustic (popcorn) ceiling texture directly on to a painted plaster ceiling?
If the paint is a semi-gloss, I would prime it first.

    It'll stick better.

But the other respondents have a point.

    Acoustic texture is so 70's.

    Nobody likes it anymore.

    But, to each his own.

Good luck. Can I spray acoustic (popcorn) ceiling texture directly on to a painted plaster ceiling?
If the ceiling is not already popcorned, then I would advise against spraying the ceiling.

I have popcorn ceilings and they are a pain to paint and repair.

I had to use the spray to repair a water damaged area and the spray goes everywhere even when you have it directed at the area you want sprayed. It spray drifts on the walls and on the floor, on you while you are doing it too.

What a mess. If I could replace all my ceilings to be just smooth drywall, I would.

    Do not popcorn your ceilings.
Popcorn ceiling texture is universally hated, why would you cover a plaster ceiling with ugly popcorn texture.
best if it is some what pourouse, but not needed. mix the popcorn wth paint and you might get better adheasion.

Is there a nice outdoor, weatherproof paint that can be used to create a textured stone effect?

I know you can buy this engineered styrofoam and apply it to the outside of your plywood frame of your house, but is their a type of paint that you can spray on to give a nice textured rock appearance? Its an outdoor retaining wall that is basically made from plywood. It doesn't look terrible now, but I'd definitely like to make it look more professional.

Is there a nice outdoor, weatherproof paint that can be used to create a textured stone effect?
Hi try searching for flex-rock or stone effects--both are brands of granite like rock that comes in a spreadable paint form.

You have to buy the primer usually %26amp; the product %26amp; then an epoxy finish--but you can purchase both brands in MANY colors.

The company that makes it is called Beauitone. Is there a nice outdoor, weatherproof paint that can be used to create a textured stone effect?
Try Sandtex, its a sand textured external emulsion paint, not sure what effect you are hoping to get but thats all I can think off.

I wouldn't use Paint as it is very limited in what it can do. You should use GIMP. It is Open Source (free to obtain and share with others) and is as powerful as Photoshop.

What kind of paint will soften the effects of a textured ceiling?

I have a textured ceiling and would like to smooth out the roughness to make it easier to clean. What kind of paint will soften the effects of a textured ceiling?
If your ceiling is a ';Popcorn'; ceiling and it has never been painted, you can remove it with water and a paint scraper. Simply fill a spritzer bottle with water...then spritz and scrape.

If the ceiling has already been painted, you don't have many options except to re-paint it.

Glossier paints are easier to clean, but will also draw attention to the texture. Flatter paints will draw attention away from the texture, but are harder to keep clean. You could compromise with a Satin Finish paint...or an Eggshell finish.

As for cleaning your ceiling once it's finished...use a fluffy microfiber mop + regular water. What kind of paint will soften the effects of a textured ceiling?

Painting after applying orange peel texture?

We're doing some remodeling and re-textured our walls this weekend. We used Sheetrock branded spray teture and applied an orange peel/splatter texture with a pneumatic texture spray gun.

We primed before we applied the texture. Do we need to prime again or can we just paint the dry surface?Painting after applying orange peel texture?
I have my own Handyman service and you should have waited to prime the dry wall until after you sprayed the texture unless it was semigloss paint that you primed over. Normally if you don't prime the texture you will have to put more paint in the walls especially with flat paint as it will not cover very well.

I would suggest that you at least put one more coat of primer and then paint the texture. That will save you paint and money.Painting after applying orange peel texture?
You have to prime now, just make sure you get a decent primer. Kilz or Zinsser are great.

  • Can I get a skip trowel look with just paint, and no texture?

I already have dark brown formals, and I would really like it to look like a skip trowel texture. However, this home is not in an expensive neighborhood, and I don't think it will go over well for resale. If that's the case, I don't want a texture on the wall that I will have to smooth out, I would rather just Kilz the room as a blank slate. Any help would be appreciated! Can I get a skip trowel look with just paint, and no texture?
You're right. If you're going to sell it in the near future do the Kilz and paint it a nice color like sand or tan.

Can I paint the inside of a closet that has textured paint? It's over 35 ears old...?

I sell paint for a living, and I run into every type of problem you can imagine. Here is my suggestion:

First of all, you must have a clean surface that is free from grease or any foreign material. Having said that, if you can handle the smell of alkyd based products (thinner based), then you should prime over the old paint with a Zinsser product called HI HIDE COVER STAIN. This will block out anything, and it will adhere to just about anything. If you cannot handle the smell of the alkyd based product, then water based Kilz is the next best idea. Just remember, the alkyd based material will only smell temporarily, and it will perform light years better than any water based material.

After the cleaning and priming, you can paint over it with any water based paint you want. It can be inexpensive, simply because it will only get minimal wear and tear because it is in a closet. I recommend Dunn Edwards Paint or Benjamin Moore. I would never ever recommend using any product from Home Depot, Lowes, or any other big box store. Stick to the paint specialists for paint.

What ever you decide to do, good luck to you!Can I paint the inside of a closet that has textured paint? It's over 35 ears old...?
yes but you may need to paint it with kilz firstCan I paint the inside of a closet that has textured paint? It's over 35 ears old...?
I think you can but the texture will still be there. If you want to get rid of the texture, you might have to sand it until the surface is smooth, then repaint. since it is in a closet, I think it would be ok to paint as is.
    sure you can
If you can go to the store and buy paint and a paint brush you can paint it. What does the age of the closet have to do with anything?
sure clean the walls. coat with a coat of Kilz primer and paint away.
yes, you can. It's possible depending how old and how good the paint is.
Certainly. It might take an extra coat if it has not been painted in so long, but painting with a roller as you would do any other interior surface should turn out just fine.
    Yes you can paint it

For going over texture you will want to be sure you are using the appropriate roller - maybe ask for help at Home Depot / Lowes

You should know - that many textures on ceilings and walls contain asbesots - so be careful not to chip a bunch of the texture off while you are refinishing it

A couple of good thick layers of latex paint will help keep the asbestos texture stuck to the wall, which is where you want it to stay!
    prime it first

    then paint it

it will still be textured though

it is probably oil base paint on it so tell them at the paint store, that you need a primer for iol base and you want to now use latex paint to paint it the final colour
I did that recently. I rented a spray painter, it went very fast. you can also get a substnce to re texture the paint if you want to. some kinds get added right to the paint, but tend to clog the paint sprayer. Get off any mildew first with a weak solution of bleach and water first, then rinse, if this has been a problem for you.

How to form such a texture in my painting??...plzzzz help?

I am makin an acrylic painting n i want to give sum effect on it through lines ...i have thought of spilling sumthing on it so it becomes hard enough..like wat shuld b MIXED WID FEVICOL so that becomes hard enough on drying n it doesn't flattens up....

...do u guys have any idea 4 it???....n will that work better on canvas or duplex sheet..How to form such a texture in my painting??...plzzzz help?
    Mix the paint with sand.

http://culturexy.blogspot.comHow to form such a texture in my painting??...plzzzz help?
Any acrylic gel medium will work with a palette knife...it is seriously that easy. Layer it on by itself, let it dry, then paint on top of the medium...you can use flat or gloss...so easy! Good luck and happy painting! I love to layer acrylic medium and use glazes of oil over it.
Acrlic gel medium will slow the process down so you have time to work in the lines and depth you want. I like to paint like VanGogh and he just used a lot of paint and often the wood end of the brush..try that too, it's fun and it works well! Good Luck!

How do you stop paint from running under tape on textured walls?

I used blue painters tape to tape the wall. It is a sheetrock wall with a textureHow do you stop paint from running under tape on textured walls?
Don't use tape, it doesn't make a clean straight line.

Go freehand and at 1st just go slow until you get the hang of cutting in.How do you stop paint from running under tape on textured walls?
brush from the edge of the tape in...meaning dont brush down or outward or use a roller use a fair amount of paint to edge it and brush away fromt eh edge...paint wont go under that way.
After you press the tape down tightly, paint it with gesso - an artists product that is used to prepare canvases for painting. You can get gesso at your local craft store. After the gesso dries (pretty quickly), you can paint as usual. Remove the tape carefully (don't just rip it off), and you will have a clean line.
You've gotta use the blue tape first of all... and you've gotta push on it REALLY hard.
there is a product called seal n peal its like a silicone caulk .first you put the seal n peal where you would put your tape then press some plastic or tape on. it it will seal together perfectly. when done it peels right off with ease
buy those painter pads that are for trim work like your doing with the wheels on the top. they dont really work normally. but with the blue tape it ends up so nice and its such a clean straight line. trust me much easier than the paint it twice crap.
Buy painters tape. Its blue and you can find at walmart, Lowe's, home depot. Press really hard when applying. Also, don't wait a day to remove it, try to remove as soon as paint dries.

  • Oil painting; What medium do I use under oil painting to sculpt a lot of texture?

I've been told to use Gesso, but in the store, that turned out to be a jar of runny liquid. I would imagine that I'd need something thick, but what? Before I start experimenting with plaster that is meant for carpentry, I would like to know if there is one made specifically as an artist supply. Can you help? ThanksOil painting; What medium do I use under oil painting to sculpt a lot of texture?
it is gesso because if you don't prime your canvas or panel your oil paint will go straight throught...gesso is watery but you have to do it! paint 1 layer of gesso at a time...for example...paint one layer then let that one dry and paint up to 2 layers..i had an oil painting class and i love building thick layers...trust me it works...if you don't put gesso over time your piece is going to be a real mess just because you didn't apply gesso...Oil painting; What medium do I use under oil painting to sculpt a lot of texture?
Yep, the guy who said acrylic modelling compound is spot on, his is the best answer...
There are wax mediums to use with oil paints, that are perfect for texture. I had a Friend that used them all the time and basically painted with palette knives.
What you're looking for is anything that involves impasto, which is the medium umbrella for anything of high relief texture involving painting. You can get impasto gels, waxes, resin-mix mediums, etc. from most paint or artist supply stores. Gesso is for priming a surface only and is basically the opposite of anything like an impasto surface. You could use gesso to prime an impasto'ed surface, for example.
whenever i used oil painting for texture, I put a tad(not too much) of turpenoid to the paint sit there for a 15 minutes or more and i paste it on my painting and palette it on with a palette knife, i like the in steel/tin palette knifes...the plastic ones i don't like. Then later after a couple of minutes or hours i stratch out some of the color on the canvas.

I like to make my own gesso which has plaster, glue, and a just deal of white paint and i mixed that in a container...it can also determined how thick you want it...like put more plaster into the mix. I usually do this in the underpainting.

There's also gesso with oil, but i never tried that stuff before. But i heard that it takes a long time to dry.

    Well good luck! ;D
Gesso is made from calcium carbonate and glue. Plaster was used by medieval and renaissance artists to create textures and architectural elements in panel paintings. So you are on the right track but if you are using plaster on canvas it will probably crack. You should be working on a panel (wood or Masonite). If you simply want to have more texture mix powdered marble dust with your gesso.

    http://www.dickblick.com/zz089/26/
You need to mix a special thing into the paint to make it thick and stay that way. Ask your local art dealer
    Hi,

Since one can apply oil paint over acrylic (not the opposite), you can buy an acrylic modelling paste/gel and then either paint over it with oil or first paint with acrylic and then oil (this I don't know). But maybe it's better to apply a coat of acrylic paint first.

    Best regards,

    Jos茅

Can you spray new texture on old painted walls?

my house needs a face lift and with all the old nail holes i want to retexture the whole wall can i spray over paint or do i ned to prime firstCan you spray new texture on old painted walls?
Spackle the nail holes and go for it. You will need to prime the new surface. I JUST did this to my 95 year old kitchenCan you spray new texture on old painted walls?
Absolutely. The only prep work that needs to be done is a lot of masking and papering - texture gets everywhere. After you have finished spraying the texture on the walls - allow 24 hours to dry and then paint as normal. If you wish to minimize the number of coats of paint - a single coat of Killz (primer) will help significantly.

    good luck
Fill the nail holes then spray the texture material over everything. No need to prime first, but prime the texture once it has dried.
Another option is to buy textured paint in a bucket. They usually come in smooth, coarse, and sand textures. I sold a product that was available in two gallon buckets in each of these textures. There are specific texture roller covers for this type of paint, or it can be troweled on. After it dries, you would paint with a quality acrylic latex paint in the sheen and color of your choice. It may be less difficult and less messy. Of course, if the walls have an existing oil based coating you would want to first prime with a primer/sealer made to bridge between oil and latex coatings.

What can i use to create texture in a painting on canvas?

Wow! What medium are you using? I paint in water-soulable oil ( all the great characteristics of regular oils no fumes and easy clean up) and acrylics. There are so many things you can use. Golden makes all kind of fiber paste - some with grounds . Things I have used besides the golden products - scrap while wet with the end of a palette knife, sludge (art store) tissue paper- matte medium it on to your paper, the icky from around your tube of paint, color, tubing. Let your imagination lead you. What can i use to create texture in a painting on canvas?
There are many pre-made textures you can buy from art/crafts stores or online. They range from powders you can mix into the paint for as little or as much texture as you want. There are gels with glass beads in them, products you can pre-shape on the canvas then paint over, and more.

You can use all sorts of tools, from branches to spatulas and anything else you can put your hands on. Try splattering, spooning, spraying, scraping on or off, throwing, stamping, or any other technique you can imagine.

Yes i have did this. Even though they say you are not supose to add or paint a textured ceiling. It shows dirt and cob webs. But all you need to do is take out alittle of the compound and hook your paddles to your drill and add as much paint as you want to get the right color. The textured you will get is what ever tool you use. There is alot out there to pick from. You can use just a regular roller and it will be like choppy water sideways. You can use a ceiling stomper and get a flower look. You can use a broom and get a fan look. So it all depends on the texture tool you pick to what look you will get.

After thousands of gallons of MUD and paint, I note PC gives you some valuable suggestions.

A few more details might be helpful to us. IE: Type of texture; Define Touch Up (the texture or the paint).

Certainly there are aerosol Popcorn touchups available. Knockdown might be a bit more challenging for a DIY. Pebble textures, or textures such as those in drop celing tiles would take some effort as well.

Knowing the type of texture would help us answer more clearly; rather than assuming.

Thats all it is paint over paint over paint over paint.I would like to know how artists achieve the heavy texture on these matalic paintings, its not just paint.?
Any material can be added to paint to increase the textural effect. Sand is a common additive, but some artists layer with material and paper. Other methods include using pure paint, but adding layers after the previous application has dried..I would like to know how artists achieve the heavy texture on these matalic paintings, its not just paint.?
Texture in paint can be achieved by the use of gel mediums, which come in light, medium, heavy %26amp; super heavy (can be molded) You can also add sand, grit, earth. There are far to many ways to alter the texture of paint to mention in a quick reply.
Add a gel medium to the paint itself or build up the texture with ordinary oil or acrylic paint and put the metallic paint, or gold leaf, on as the top layer.

There are several ways to do it.

Like paint the wall and let is dry. Then paint over it with another color that looks good with the one under it and you take a fine needle brush and scrape the new color while it's set so it makes lines and you get a mix of the bottom and top color streaked.

    Is that called texturing?

House Painting: Textured Walls/Ceiling - need more Paint?

Hi, I am completely new to house-painting and decided rather foolishly to paint my apartment, but it took sooooooooooo much paint I don't know if I did something wrong? The walls and ceiling are ';textured';, not with the textured wallpaper but I think some kind of sand textured paint. Anyway, I started painting and used a whole massive tub of paint just for one wall (it was supposed to do 50msq). I bought 2 more and still only did one quarter of the apartment! Help! It was so difficult to paint because I had to press so hard with the roller to cover all the little bumps!

My question is - was I doing something wrong or is textured paint more difficult and uses more paint??House Painting: Textured Walls/Ceiling - need more Paint?
Texture on walls and ceilings takes a LOT more paint. When I paint a textured surface I use a roller with a 3/4 inch nap. This means the padding(fuzz) on the roller is 3/4 inch thick. It gets into all the little nooks and crannies easier than a thinner roller. Sometimes, with a heavy texture, it's easier to use a brush to work the paint into bigger gaps.

One of the other answers suggested purchasing a paint sprayer for the job. Don't waste the money. You'll have to cover everything in the apartment to protect it from over spray. And the sprayers sold for home owner use like a 'Wagner Power Painter' are useless after the first paint job, and very difficult to clean out.House Painting: Textured Walls/Ceiling - need more Paint?
long nap rollers have thick application surface and hold more paint-- when painting textured surfaces-- will require more paint-- a gallon of paint usually covers 200 to 400 sq. feet-- textured walls will absorb more-- get a paint sprayer and good paint to do the job-- you get what you pay for so good paint actually saves money
the more texture the wall has the more paint you use. but use a long nap roller to apply and it goes on easy

  • What is the easiest way to texture a wall prior to painting?

go to lowes or hd, get a bucket of premade light weight joint compound, it makes less of a mess. take a dry wall knife, about six inches and coat wall is a three by three area about an eighth of an inch thick. the thicker you make it the deeper the impressions will be. take a slotted spatchula and smack around on the compound going in different directions, it may sound weird, but i have done this, it works lol give it a few minutes to dry. then take another dry wall knife, ten inches or less, and do X strokes lightly over the area you used the spatchula on, don't be afraid lol most people are when doing projects like this. continue on in three by three areas until finished. allow to dry for fourty eight hours. paint with a base primer color close to what the top color will be. this will give you a beautiful texture. i have it in my hallway. i used ralph lauren jewel toned paints in brown, moss green and gold, it turned out looking like a million bucks. if you have a homedepot close to you, bher paint products offers a dvd or texture style and paint recommendations. good luckWhat is the easiest way to texture a wall prior to painting?
Depends on the type of texture.

If you want an orange-peel-type of texture, you can buy spray cans of it at paint supply places. It comes with three different diameter straw nozzles for different sized bumps.

If it's more of an adobe look (called a knockdown), you can get a box of drywall mud, put some in a bucket and thin it out a bit with water (to the consistency of mustard), and then use a wide paint brush to sling glops of it on the wall (very messy - use lots of dropcloths). Let this dry for about an hour, so it sets up a bit. Then you go over it lightly with a skip trowel to get that adobe look. Then lightly sand it, and wipe off the dust with a damp cloth before priming and painting.

Whatever you do, I suggest you practice a bit first on a scrap piece of drywall to get the process down. What is the easiest way to texture a wall prior to painting?
Lowe's and Home Depot both sell a product called ';texture paint'; that comes in a 2-gallon bucket. They have three different textures (smooth, sand, and popcorn) and it is applied just like regular paint. According to the label, the product can act as a top coat (meaning that, if you want white walls, you can just simply apply their product and you're done - you don't have to paint on top of it). However, every time I've used it, I've found that it looks better if you apply a top coat on top of it.
Mix drywall mud and paint at about a 50/50 ratio. (Not critical). Mix it very, very well. A paint mixer in a drill is a good idea. Then roll it on. Experiment a bit with length of nap on the roller, how much compound you load on the roller, how much you roll it out, etc. When you find the combination you like, go for it.
there are several ways to give texture your walls. I did it to the basement floor so we wouldn't slip coming in from outside on rainy days. BIG mistake. It is a pain in the tush to wash! So think about it before you make a choice. There are paints, suede, etc. that add texture just by the paint itself. Check Home Depot.
i guess it would depend on what type of texture, I know they sell a product in a spray can that adds texture ,but it is pretty strong smelling.so lots of ventilation , they all sell texture to be added directly to the pain itself .
Get a hopper from home depot and the stuff that goes with it. You could also get a bucket of drywall compound and trowel it on for a plastered look. If you use the drywall compound you will need primer tinted close to your paint color as a first coat of paint.

For painting your wall you can mix in lots of things to get texture, like sawdust or cotton for example. You can use a sponge to ';stamp'; the paint on the wall to get effects. Also, try mixing colors or tones to gain depth.

If you are talking about artistic painting (or even for decorating your wall) I recommend acrylic paint or oil painting. Also, try using your brush in unconventional ways (instead of just stroking the surface). You can also ditch the brush and use other materials to apply it. This gives a LOT of texture. What is the best paint for getting lots of texture??
They make paint pre-mixed which has texture in it. Go to Home Depot or Lowes or a hardware store. There is also texture that you can stir into plain paint, but that is more a pain in the neck. You can also buy rollers that will give a textured look when used on the wall.
Are you talking about painting art? If that is the case I would say oils. You can manipulate them as you wish and even add impasto.

Oils are my favorite choice and my impressionistic paintings often have a 3D effect.

For me acrylics and watercolors are too flat.

My brother-in-law told me about Goof Off, which I know is sold at Walmart in the automotive section. It actually takes off dried latex paint. I've used it many times to clean paint off of window frames and things that are years old. Be careful though. It is strong stuff. Just use a tiny bit on a rag to see if it hurts the finish. It also smells awful, but when dry the smell goes away. Watch the fumes and it's flammable. But it's not as bad as it sounds. I once used it to take permanent hair color out of my bathroom rug. Although don't tell anyone I color my red (really gray) hair. LOLHow do I clean acrylic wall paint off of a fiberglass, textured bathtub floor?
Try Bon Ami. Keep it plenty wet w/ just a regular sponge. You may also try to fill the tub with hot water and let it sit for 15 or 20 minutes before you clean it. This will soften the paint.
Acrylic paint usually comes up with soapy hot water and stiff brush (toothbrush) or a bath body scrubber. Acrylic is water based paint. Try running some water in the tub with the stopper in, and let it soak for ahile first.
Hi, there is a product that takes dried latex paint off of anything without damage to that item. Even clothes! It's called,';Save A Brush'; and it's made by ,';Red Devil'; you can order it direct from them at www.reddevil.com. it costs $10.00 and is well worth it. I don't know anyplace else that sells it though. I happened to find it in my Dad's Garage just by chance. The stuff really works on anything you need to take dried latex paint off of. We did this in our living room. Just get yourself a 5 gal. bucket or joint compound and a wide spackling knife. We just slopped it onto the wall and smeared it around with no discernable pattern. You can add as little or as much as you like. Then I got the lady in the paint department to tint Kilz Primer in an aztec gold color and used this instead of paint. Since it's in your kitchen, I'd recommend using a semigloss paint for washability.
You can purchase a type of wall paper that I believe is called wall liner. It is paintable and has many different patterns to choose from. Try searching on the Sherwin Williams website.

Go to home depot, there are two different things, as one person said already you can use knockdown texture that comes in a spray can but, that stuff is messy and difficult and you have to wait fot it to dry, etc. Best thing ever, there is a patch, like a drywall patch that already has the texture on it! It comes in many different textures, from just a little bit to alot. At home depot it is in the paint department by the drywall patches, I use them and LOVE them, it is so easy.. See what happens if you don't read things carefully. Yes, you can touch up textured paint but you have to do some test patches on a piece of scrap material until you get the results you want. This can take some time for an amateur. I speak from experience. I eventually got it right but like I said do the test boards first.
Yes, with a little practice. If it is ';knockdown'; texture, they sell repair kits in spray cans. Works really well.
If the texture is gone there are spray texture solutions available at hardware stores and home suppliers.

What kind of texture should I use for painting?

I just bought my first house, and am painting my bedroom. I NEED to use textured paint...don't ask. There is the sand that you mix with the paint, and there is a spray on kind. which is easier, better and why? What kind of texture should I use for painting?
your best bit is ';flat paint'; 1 reason its better for your pocket and also you caN do anything with flat paint n the color you pick looks better and last longer time also you can alway paint over with out changing the paint under only if u do have to change the paint under if its darks color and you gooing for lighter then your color will look differ so go 4 da flat! What kind of texture should I use for painting?
Spraying with sand may seem easier but if you have trouble with the sand clogging up the nozzle you will spend more time fixing it time and again. I would paint it on. Keep adding sand and stirring and then paint it on a board until you get the texture you want.

You can do it in liquid bituman.

If the walls are not that good go for textured, you can make pretty patterens, we have done ours spanish style
Is this inside or outside the house as both require different treatments ?
I would go for the texture. Use a scrap piece of plaster board and try a few different methods...heavy texture to light..see how it looks, hold it up to the wall . We just used wall plaster compound and a sprayer ( rented at the hardware store) .It wasn't difficult to do. .I am not sure what the rest of your question entails sorry...hope this helps though.
You are best off going for textured as it will fill the fine cracks and it will cover an uneven surface well. The bottom 6'; unrendered bricks i can not help you with. sorry.
the black is normaly a bitumen type paint as it last longer an a damp surface ..i would still go with smooth masonry paint ..dulux weathersheild ..it stays cleaner much lon ger than textured ..and dries out quicker
if you go below the damp course it is all nackered lol.whatever you use.

  • Help with painting over ';paint splash'; texture on walls!?

I am working on painting a bedroom at a house we recently bought. The current room is white with red and blue ';paint splashes'; on the wall. Looks like someone just took a paint brush, dipped it in paint and splashed the paint all over the walls. I DO NOT want this look on the walls. This is going to be my daughters bedroom and she wants the walls to be a dark pink. I primed the walls with a high hide tinted primer (tinted the same color that she wants the room painted), have painted 1 coat so far). Just like I figured would happen, you can see the paint splash marks because they are pretty thick splashes. I've tried sanding the splashes in a small area and they are still visible!!! What are my options at this point? Can I texture the walls so way to camoflauge the paint splash marks? I've seen some walls that are textured, but I'm not familiar with how to do this. Please help!! Thanks in advance!Help with painting over ';paint splash'; texture on walls!?
It would be quickest easiest and prab;y cheapest to paper the walls with lining paper or anaglypta and then paint it the colour you want.Help with painting over ';paint splash'; texture on walls!?
I've textured rough looking walls. It's easy, but a little time consuming. Just buy a 5 gallon bucket of All Purpose Joint Compound and start spreading it on the wall with a spade. You can get a spade that is smooth on one side and grooved on the other. While spreading just alternate the flat side with the grooved side to get the desired look you want. It will perfectly camoflage the paint spatters and it gives a nice look to the room. Don't be scared, just jump in and do it. It's really easy once you get started. Be sure and cover your floors and remove trim first. If you don't want to do this, you might purchase or rent a steam scrapper that MIGHT loosen the paint enought to scrape it off, but if it was me; I'd go with the texture. It looks better and will be easier in the long run. Good luck!
There is a textured paint available that rolls on. I used it a few years back to paint over concrete block. It turned out very nice. Check with your local paint supply store about it. Also, the coarseness of the texture depends on the type of roller that you use. Best of luck!

Do the dots with spray paint and a stencil.

I scraped off the popcorn ceiling in a room. Now how can I get an orange peel texture before painting?

Mix a solution of 50% water and joint compound until smooth. Apply to a small section(just to be sure) of the ceiling with a heavy-nap roller. Before the material gets too dry, knock down the dimples with a drywall knife. This will simulate a very light splatter/knock-down finish. The cost is minimal, and you can vary the texture according to your technique.

An interesting variation of this is to paint the ceiling first with a nice pastel color. The white joint compound makes a nice contrast and creates an interesting effect.

I hope this helps.I scraped off the popcorn ceiling in a room. Now how can I get an orange peel texture before painting?
Apply slightly thined taping mud to the area with a wadded up plastic bag in about a four square foot area, allow to dry out just a little then wipe a broad knife across it randomly in arcs, this is a nice texture method, similar to what the old timers call ';skip trowle'n';. My ex wifes father could produce this texture with one stroke of a 16'; knife, but he has past on, as has the art. Good Luck and Practice I did my whole house using this method and it looks great.I scraped off the popcorn ceiling in a room. Now how can I get an orange peel texture before painting?
You can go to any paint store and purchase a ';Sponge'; to stomp it on with, there are many other types, crows foot and so on. The sponge will attach to a long handled broom that you dip into the texture, then apply to the ceiling.

Same as you would paint a smooth wall. Cut with a brush, then roll the rest of the wall. The nap of the roller would depend on the type of texture. Most are fine with a 1/2'; nap. Deeper textures, such as stucco, would need a 3/4';. Hope this helps.I have a textured walls and want to paint over them what is the best method to paint textured walls?

    Interior wall painting-texture and color?

I'm painting my living room, we have textured walls. My question is which will bring out the texture more, light or dark colors?Interior wall painting-texture and color?
Light colors....Texture is perceived by the shadows of the surface...If it's a dark color...the contrast is harder to perceive. You can try with 2 colors and paint a 2 ft x 2 ft almost side by side...and you'll seeInterior wall painting-texture and color?
Light colors, I think. And I think a flat finish is suggested in living rooms, not sure on that though.
good answer gaston, i was gonna say the same thing as we are painting the interior of the house now.
light colors will work but how about accenting one wall with a differant colo it will make the room look larger.and go for a eggshell or satin finish so you can wash dirt off if you need to

I am wanting to shop on line for some pictures on the soft canvas but can't find it.I don't know what to type in..Thanks to anyone who can help. Can someone tell what is the art work on the soft canvas called? The paint is very textured.?
You may be talking about oil painting. Can someone tell what is the art work on the soft canvas called? The paint is very textured.?
Oil or acrylic paint on canvas. There is no name for it. Canvas is just the surface it's painted on. The thick textured brushstroke is often found in impressionism, post-impressionism, and abstract.
    Try searching oil pastel paintings.

Pastel paintings are oily and look

    textured when they dry.

Does anyone have a recipe for an impasto or texture medium for oil paints?

A friend wanted a three dimensional effect for her painting. It is an abstract.Does anyone have a recipe for an impasto or texture medium for oil paints?
    Hi Kate

Try this and see if it is suitable for your friends technique.

Add a small amount of 'polyfilla' like decorators use.

Only use small amounts at a time in, in it's powdered form, no water - natch!

How do I remove the paint from the textured glass in my old french doors?

Ravor blabe and Goof Off(a household cleaning product) and let the Goof Off set for a few minutes and then lightly scrape the paint off.How do I remove the paint from the textured glass in my old french doors?
I would try TSP and water with an old tooth brush and keep a rag below to stop it getting on anything else. :)How do I remove the paint from the textured glass in my old french doors?
i believe they sell a PLASTIC TYPE wire wheel that you can put in a drill and gently grind the paint out.... test in a spot not so noticeable...
razor blade works best, but maybe not in your case. Krudd Kutter will soften any paint, then wipe it up

Can you spray or roll on wall texture over an already painted wall?

The texture surface is way to rough in one room, plus it's painted with semi-gloss paint. I was curious if I could just re- texture the walls right over the paint? I want it smoother so I can apply wallpaper. Sanding would take forever!!Can you spray or roll on wall texture over an already painted wall?
If you want the wall smoother so you can apply wallpaper over it, I would first prime the wall with an oil primer (because it is painted in semi gloss) such as Zinsser's Coverstain or XIM 400 (provide good ventilation during and after painting).

Then you should skim coat the walls with drywall compound to smooth out the texture thus giving you a smoother wall to wallpaper over. Skim coating is the process of applying drywall compound to the entire wall. This is done by applying the compound with a broad knife of 12 '; or larger. You will probably need to skim it twice to get it smooth - allow the drywall compound to dry between coats. Sand the compound smooth. Vacuum off the dust and prime with a new construction drywall primer.

After the PVA primer has dried I would re-prime with a wall covering primer such as Zinsser's Shieldz.

You will have a smooth wall ready for wallpaper at this point. Can you spray or roll on wall texture over an already painted wall?
Yes, you can go over the paint with drywall mud but eventually you will have to do some sanding.
I'm afraid that if you don't want to sand then you are going to have to go with a rough texture wall. Try priming the wall and do a faux finish over it. I have done two of my rooms in this technique and there are great metallics out that Benjamin Moore Paint makes. Just pick up a base color and 2-3 metallics and some glaze. They have booklets, for free, that lead you through the process and you will love the rich soothing result.
you will need to use a primer on the wall to make plaster stick.

you might consider priming the wall and then applying a product that goes up like wallpaper made for flatting the wall.
Assuming the existing paint is latex you can prime over the wall with an acrylic primer/sealer like ';Gripper'; or ';Zinsser 123';, next, skim the wall with premixed drywall compound to fill the texture, sand and re-prime.

If you plan to wallpaper, applying an additional wallpaper primer like ';Shieldz'; is also a good idea.

    Best Luck!
If you want walls smooth enough to apply wallpaper, you will have to 'float' out the walls with drywall mud, sand smooth, then start your wallpaper process.

Yes, you can put drywall mud over the paint.
