Textured Spray paint on wooden table top?

I saw some neat textured spray paints you can use to create a hammered metal look. How would that work on a piece of plywood I want to spiff up to use as a simple coffee table top? Would I need to prepare the surface? Thanks!Textured Spray paint on wooden table top?

Use primer paint first; then the paint color you want; then a poly finish on it to keep it from coming off. Home Depot or Lowes has it all.
i would definately recommend priming first
