Can you use textured paint over old glossy paint?

Hello everybody. I'm planning to paint my living room using a textured paint. It hasn't been painted in almost 20 years, but it does have a semi-gloss paint at the moment. Would I have to apply a base paint before painting it the desired textured paint or will I be safe painting right over it? Thanks in advance for all the help! Can you use textured paint over old glossy paint?
A bit confused by why you mean as ';textured'; paint? First, prep your walls by filling in any holes where pictures were, unless you plan on hanging back in same place, with Spackle and sand down edges, if necessary. If walls are relatively smooth and flat (in reasonably good shape!) and the existing paint is a light color, no need to prime. Behr and other paint manufacturers do make a primer and paint, all in one, but it is expensive. I've done a bunch of faux painting and will always use semi gloss as you can wipe it clean!! One bathroom I used a trowel with joint compound to get a textured effect and then used 2 different colors (peach and lilac), a ';pounding'; brush, glaze and spray bottle of water. Great tie-dye effect; however, last time I do that!! All the dust ';catches'; in the swirls and grooves of the troweled texture! At least, with the semi-gloss paint and glaze, I can take a brush with hot soapy water to the walls to clean! Go on to HGTV or DIY network on computer. Both ';sister'; websites have great ideas on ';painting';. Usually, one just has to wash down walls, tape off windows, baseboards, ceiling ( USE the ';painter's tape'; - it's worth the $$ instead of masking tape which is tough to get off!) and then paint! Good luck and do yourself a big favor and get ideas from the web sites or attend one of the free faux classes they offer at Lowe's nad/or Home Depot, if possible. Sasha

P.S. If walls are not smooth as you would like, get some fine sandbox sand to mix in with paint for a whole different ';texture'; but go lightly and try it out first on a sample/poster boardCan you use textured paint over old glossy paint?
At the very least run some sand paper over the walls to degloss. Paint does not stick well to shiny walls. If you want to do it right kilz primer is a good choice, get the KILZ 2 its latex based and is usually $13 a gallon. It dries quick and you can paint over it with in a few hours of it drying.
if you don't want to start by sanding the walls (and you don't), paint on a product called Kilz, available at your local hardware or paint store.

consult the link below for useful tips.
No sanding! No priming! Just clean the walls down with TSP before you start to paint.
