How do i change the surface pattern/texture on a wall that i'm going to paint?

i am a drywall finisher w/16 years of exp.,youre best bet will be to use a rough grade sandpaper (80grit) and sand over the walls with a sand pole or use a porter cable electric sander.


there are many (around 30-40) different types of texture available,but as a homeowner you should keep it simple,try shooting a nice spanish lace on your walls using a hopper with a \medium tip. spray the texture wait until the gloss comes out of the spray and lay it down with a wide lexan knife,available at home depot.How do i change the surface pattern/texture on a wall that i'm going to paint?
If the whole wall is textured, and you want to change the texture on the whole wall, it would be your best bet to get a contractor. If there are some spots on the wall that have been patched and you want to get them to match the rest of the wall, you would need some mud to cover up the patch and the same type of texture (knock-down, orange peel) and then apply that to the wall. After that, you need to primer that newly textured peice before painting. Texture is tricky. Unless you have some practice, your patience might run out. It may take several attempts before it looks right. If you are looking cheapest way out, heres what i would do. Anywhere around you that a new sub-division or a new home is being built, catch the builder or the drywall guys while their on the job site and just say ';hey,look guys i need a room(s) textuerd and i can't afford to rent a spry rig let alone know how to use it ,if i had the rooms ready to where ya'll could just walk right in and spray and scrape how much would you charge? Unless you've got money just lying around , get used to it
There are several ways to accomplish this .sand paper will either smooth or ruff your wall you can also put plaster in different textures, or use wallpaper with a pressed pattern these are just a few of the many possible ways.
if it is flat, try spackling, if it is already spackled then sand it down.
surface pattern can be changed by sponge painting.
