Utrecht professional gesso is a very heavy bodied gesso (about the thickness of sour cream) that can be sculpted to create an awesome underpainting. You can apply it extremely thick and it will remain flexible. You just need to be sure and give it lots of time to cure. You can press objects into it to create impressions as well. The best part is the price...it is much cheaper than acrylic gel, and much easier to paint over than gel is. For more ideas, join my yahoo group...Experimental Acrylics.
get some texture gel mediums of some sort. They have all different textures and finishes. Plus, you can get different textured objects and paint over them... like some sort of metal screen or something paint directly on top of it on your painting... the paint can act as an adhesive.

Kudos on experimenting.

I did that with modeling clay on canvas.....Try applying the modeling clay on the area u want texture, then with a straw apply the texture u want...leave it to dry then apply the acrylic paint on it!!
Sand, gravel, buttons (small ones), can paint over textured wallpaper (get free samples from B%26amp;Q) lol!! ;) , pencil sharpenings, tiny beads, the list is endless! ...
you can buy texture paste for acrylics or Black Lava texture gel, sawdust or sand.
