How to smoothen rusty texture of acrylic paint?

I'm currently in the process of painting a small detailed jewelry box, I'm using acrylic paint but the problem is, when the paint dries, the texture is coming out really rusty, I want to have a smooth and glossy surface for it..

I've experimented with sanding the painted surface but the paint is coming off...

Does anyone know how I could smoothen out the surface without scraping off the paint? How to smoothen rusty texture of acrylic paint?
wording mixed, rusty is a brownish orange term, texture is the bumpy surface, when you paint the surface with acrylics, the color does fade slightly, and also the glossy appearance goes dull, if these are craft acrylics, there are clear shellac coats you can apply over colour, possibly a spray to coat and protect,
