Do you have to paint once you put texture on a ceiling?

No. More often than not, new construction will not paint textured ceilings. Painting is best, though, to allow cleaning and prevent yellowing over time. If you choose to paint, use a 3/4'; nap roller. Home Depot and Lowe's sell color-changing ceiling paint so you can see where you are painting; it changes from pink/purple during application to flat white and cost about $17 a gallon.Do you have to paint once you put texture on a ceiling?
Yes! You have to ';seal'; the textured material, as its in its ';raw'; state.

You can use either latex or enamel to seal it.

But, remember this, if you use ';mud'; or joint compound, then you used the ';wrong stuff'; as it will simply ';wipe clean'; when you try to wash the silly thing! (I had renters who did this, an I told them it wouldnt work, and they didnt believe me, and I almost laughted out loud when they told me later that when they went to wash it, it went ';smooth';! :)

Use the approved compound.

Now, if you have any type of allergies, or lung disease, its best NOT to have a textured ceiling! This texture ceiling traps mold, and mildew and all kinds of dust so that its a hazard to any one with lung disease. (You dont know how many have been taken down because of this!).

I wish you well...

Yes. You need to seal it. The texture isn't sealed. :)
