Do I need to prime over texture paint?

We recently took down some wall paper to find that there was only drywall behind it. We primed over that and now are preparing to apply texture paint. The guy at the store told us we should prime over this before painting it a different color. Is this true? Do we need to also prime the texture paint or is it just added work? It seems like a lot of layers to me... Thanks!Do I need to prime over texture paint?
It is always a good idea to prime over texture paint before painting it another color. If you don't, you'll find you have even more work cut out for you, as the texture paint will soak up alot of the paint, thereby making you paint more coats than would be needed if you primed the texture paint first. Also keep in mind that primer is much less expensive than paint and will only need one coat of primer. If you don't prime, you may find that you'll need 3 to 4 coats of paint instead of 2...Do I need to prime over texture paint?

Unfortunately, yes, you do need to prime it. You didn't need to prime it before applying the texture. You do need to prime it after the textue.


If you don't prime the texture it may take several coats of paint instead of one to get the full coverage look desired.
Think of it this way: Primer cost less than the paint. If you use the primer, it will take less paint and it seals the old paint so that the colors do not blend. You鈥檒l get the exact color.
Because of the paint mixed in with the texture you shouldn't have to.


I read the label on my container of texture paint and it talks of priming fresh drywall before the application of the texture paint but not after.
